Winemakers Tasting Notes
A fruit driven wine that is dominated by the berry fruit
characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot.
A layer of chocolate is gained from the addition of
Shiraz and sweetness is apparent on the palate. This
wine is not over powered by oak, allowing the fruit
to show its full potential. A rich combination of flavours
that is ideally suited to current consumption.

Is an unusual blend of Cabernet, Shiraz, Petite Verdot
and Grenache - but it works. Deceptive! An easy-drinking,
fruit-driven wine that's perfectly balanced and put
together; the Cabernet component dominates. Blackcurrant
and mint, its savoury, but there is a sweet lower layer
of chocolate as well. Ample-weight with a supple consistency
and harmonious complexity, it's most enjoyable and will
be perfect with pasta. Rated as Agreeable with *****
for value, it is a steal and every home should have
a couple of cases. Ric Einstein, the Opinionated Red

General Notes
Seven Sleepers, or Siebenschlaffer, is so named to reflect
an old Barossa German tradition, being the weather that
occurs on the 27th June is likely to be prevalent for
the next 7 weeks. We believe that growing grapes by
Kurtz Family Vineyards in the Barossa valley is another
tradition of note.
The following varieties and percentages were used in
the formation of this red wine blend. Cabernet Sauvignon
(30%), Petite Verdot (20%), Shiraz (20%), Grenache (18%)
and the balance; Cabernet Franc, Mataro and Malbec.
All parcels were ferment separately and all pressings
were added to the free run. Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented
on skins for a 10 day total to allow full extraction
of colour and tannins. The Petite Verdot, although only
12.3 baume at harvest produced a wine of great colour
and this forms the backbone of the wine. The Grenache
and Shiraz were combined once the initial blend of the
2004 Boundary Row GSM was completed. All other varieties
were combined post pressing, as they were in reasonably
small quantities. Wood maturation was kept to a 12 month
period to allow the fruit flavours to fully develop.

Reviews and Awards
Kurtz Family Vineyards Barossa Valley Seven Sleepers 2004
There are seven grape varieties in this lighter-bodied Barossan red (Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot, Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Mataro and Malbec). Drinking it is a bit of a wild ride: farm-floor, leather, bright red fruits and tar. There are also some spicy, dried herb characters - it's not what I'd call a clean wine, but it is a good drink. Fun, interesting, a little short on the finish. Drink: 2007-2009. 85 points.
Campbell Mattinson “The Wine Front”: Reviewed 21.08.2007
2004 Seven Sleepers Dry Red: "Rich, syrupy nose
with gamey/leathery complexity. Powerful and complex
cherry and spice palate. Excellent balance between the
oak and the fruit and still showing great freshness."
