Boundary Row GSM

2005 Vintage Grenache Shiraz Mataro

Winemakers Tasting Notes
The 2005 Boundary Row GSM bouquet shows sweet blackberry notes with vanilla and charcuterie below, and with hints of milk chocolate, it's attractive. A well-made, clean, solidly balanced wine that is driven by pure fruit, and backed by silky, chalky tannins, it's medium-weight with a supple consistency, and has a diverse, harmonious complexity. This is a cuddly wine that is easy-drinking, will go well with food, and shows some restraint. Flavours of blackberry, black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and mint have a meaty, spicy finish.
The blending of Shiraz and Mataro has added complexity to the dry grown Grenache and ageing for 18 months in French barrels has enhanced the combination of these three varieties, creating a full-bodied wine suited to most situations.  The wine was made with minimal interference from the winemaker.  Fermentation was for 7 – 10 days depending on the parcel of fruit.  Malo-lactic ferment was encouraged as soon as primary ferment was completed.  All parcels were kept separate for primary ferment and then blended once Malo was through and spent a further 4 months in barrel.

Although suitable for current consumption, this wine will continue to improve for a further 4-5 years with careful cellaring.

Food Accompaniments:

I suggest red meats, Italian pasta dishes and game birds such as duck or quail.  Rich sauces are complimented by the ability of this wine to meld all the various flavours.

General Notes
Vineyards in the Barossa Valley traditionally have no fence lines to divide the properties of you and your neighbour, instead a ‘Boundary Row’ is planted and the yield from this row is shared.  We would like to share this ‘Boundary Row’ with you.

Grenache component includes fruit from 85-year old dry grown bush vines from Kalimna.
